Infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with various cancers, including cervical cancer. Researchers are working to understand the processes by which HPV can transform a healthy cell into a cancerous one. This image shows human ectocervical cells (HEC) expressing HPV-16 E5, and immortalized with HPV-16 E6 and E7 oncoproteins. Formation of koilocytes requires cooperation between HPV E5 and E6 oncoproteins. E5 localizes to perinuclear vesicles in koilocytotic cells. The cell culture is stained with hematoxylin (blue) and reacted with antibody against epitope-tagged E5 (brown) .
