Title: Studying Natural Products
Description: The National Cancer Institute's Natural Products Branch at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research is the largest program to collect materials worldwide from marine, plant, and microbial sources so they may be studied for possible medical uses. Solid phase extraction is a technique that is used to remove oils and other water insoluble compounds prior to separation of a mixture on an HPLC instrument. Here, an extract dissolved in solvent is passed through a syringe filled with an adsorbent material. Highly soluble compounds pass through the adsorbent while sticky compounds are removed. Both of the resulting fractions are recovered and submitted for biological evaluation.
