High levels of the critical gene Sox10 are linked to breast cancer, particularly the ability to metastasize. Cells expressing the Sox10 gene form miniature mammary organoids in a dish. When Sox10 is highly expressed in cells, they attempt to migrate out of the organoid. Cells expressing high levels of Sox10 (blue) have turned off cytokeratin expression (red and green) and become poised to migrate from the organoid (left). In another organoid on the right, these cells expressing Sox10 (blue) have now left the organoid and migrated into the surrounding area. These disseminated cells then have the capacity to form new organoids. This image was originally submitted as part of the 2016 NCI Cancer Close Up project. |
