Title: Studying Natural Products
Description: The National Cancer Institute's Natural Products Branch at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research is the largest program to collect materials worldwide from marine, plant, and microbial sources so they may be studied for possible medical uses. Shown here is a high-pressure liquid chromatograph/mass spectrometer (HPLC/MS) system, which allows the operator to identify chemical structures of the components of a mixture, to purify compounds from bioactive extracts, and to assess the purity of a sample. In vivo biological testing of natural products isolates requires that a sample be as pure as possible.
